Planeview, Hilltop neighborhoods patrolled
Children who are trick-or-treating in two southeast Wichita neighborhoods will have a safer night this weekend, thanks to a City of Wichita roundup of stray dogs.
Officers from Animal Services and the Wichita Police Department patrolled the Planeview and Hilltop neighborhoods Wednesday and captured 13 dogs that were running at large. Seven were returned to their owners, along with a municipal court citation for allowing their dogs to run at large. The remaining six were taken to the City of Wichita animal shelter at the Murfin Animal Care Campus. The dogs were of various breeds, including one pit bull which was returned to its owner.
An additional eight citations were issued to other neighborhood dog owners for licensing or tethering violations.
“Our goal was to reduce the number of dangerous dogs running at large and provide a safer Halloween night for children in these two neighborhoods,” explained Don Henry, City of Wichita manager with Environmental Services, which includes Animal Control.
The stray dog issue is of particular concern in southeast Wichita, which includes Wichita Council District 3. Of the six City Council districts, District 3 recorded the most dog attacks in 2008, a total of 81.
