The Wichita Fire Department would like to remind citizens that with the exception of the Fourth of July, it is unlawful for any person to possess, store, offer for sale or discharge any fireworks in the Wichita city limits. Fireworks are defined as any item that shoots beyond a six-foot sphere. Novelty fireworks are those that give off sparks or smoke, but do not actually move.
"Essentially anything from bottle rockets to sparklers are illegal to use right now," said Chief Bob Thompson.
This rule is defined by regulations of the State of Kansas Fire Marshal, and Fire Chief of the City of Wichita.
In order to ensure citizen safety, Fire Department personnel and police officers will confiscate fireworks and issue citations to those in violation of the City Ordinance.
For a fire-safe New Year and millennium celebration, The Wichita Fire Department urges all citizens to attend public firework displays conducted by trained professionals.
