It’s time to do a little Spring cleaning! The City of Wichita will host its annual Spring Clean-up Days at Brooks Landfill on April 29 and 30. That means citizens can load up their pick-up trucks and trailers and dump their junk at Brooks for FREE on these two days! The normal tipping fee is $26 per ton, with a $20 minimum charge.

Only non-commercial vehicles (defined as non-business pickup trucks, cars and trailers up to 14 feet) will be admitted for free. Vehicles larger than a pickup truck or trailers longer than 14 feet must have a pass from the City of Wichita or they will be charged admission to the landfill. Passes will be issued to vehicles and trailers used in a neighborhood or civic cleanup project. To obtain a pass, call the Wichita Public Works Department at 268-4497 during office hours, no later than April 25.

Yard waste and most appliances will be accepted, along with miscellaneous junk and debris. All loads should be tied or covered to prevent littering on the way to the landfill. Special handling charges will be charged for non-crushable items larger than 3 feet, such as tree stumps, concrete, etc. For special handling charge information, contact Brooks Landfill at 722-0601.

Items which will not be accepted include tires and tire pieces; appliances containing refrigerants, such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners that have not been drained by a certified technician; and hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, motor oil, bug sprays and weed killers.

State law prohibits the disposal of tires in landfills. Tire dealers may accept old tires for a fee. EPA regulations require that refrigerants be professionally drained from air conditioners, etc. by a certified technician. Refrigerant-type appliances brought to Brooks Landfill must be certified by the business that removed the refrigerant.

Auto batteries and motor oil can be recycled; other hazardous wastes should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection site at 2305 East 57th Street South, Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 AM to 1 PM. Details on what is accepted and how it should be packaged can be obtained by calling the Wichita-Sedgwick County Health Department at 268-8351.

The Landfill is located at 4100 North West Street (K-96 and West Street). For further information, contact the Department of Public Works at 268-4497. It will be opened from 7 AM to 5 PM during Spring Clean-up Days.
