The Wichita Animal Shelter has many furry friends waiting to be adopted. On Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7, the shelter will waive the $10 adoption fee in honor of the 2000 Pet Adopt-a-thon. The two-day promotion is part of a national campaign sponsored by the North Shore Animal League. Each spring, the Animal Shelter overflows with puppies and kittens needing good homes. Of the 12,000 animals handled by the shelter each year, only about 11% are adopted back into the community. The Pet Adopt-a-thon attempts to place needy animals into loving homes. During last year’s Adopt-a-thon, 36 Wichita pets, about three times the weekend adoption average, received new homes. During the Adopt-a-thon, pets can be adopted at the Wichita Animal Shelter, located at 3303 N. Hillside, between 1 and 5 PM. Local Petsmart stores will also waive adoption fees on shelter pets from 9 AM to 9 PM on Saturday and 10 AM to 8 PM on Sunday. Rabies vaccination and distemper/parvo vaccination fees, as well as spaying/neutering and dog license voucher costs will still be charged.
