"My advice to young players is to see as much good tennis as possible and then attempt to copy the outstanding strokes of the former stars." – William Tilden
It all started with just a little challenge. El Dorado Mayor Susan Seeber and City Manager Stan Stewart challenged Wichita Mayor Bob Knight and City Manager Chris Cherches to a tennis match. That little challenge has turned into a major tennis competition between the two cities to be held on June 16, 2000 at the Water Works Tennis Courts, 300 E. Central, El Dorado.
The Tennis Challenge Match will be held on June 16, 2000, and will include employees from both cities. The Round Robin Play between the employees (the best tennis players on each staff) begins at 9:00 AM. Following the "pros", in the spirit of the quote by Mr. Tilden, the Mayors and the Managers will then play each other at 11:00 AM.
Non-playing council members from both cities will be helping as line judges and scorekeepers. Mike Boucher of the El Dorado Times, Bob Lutz of the Wichita Eagle and Hutchinson Council Member and Former Mayor Jeff Roberts will serve as judges. Ted Woodward of KNSS radio will emcee the event.
An awards ceremony will immediately follow the tennis tournament at 201 E. Central in El Dorado.
In the event of inclement weather, the tournament will be held at the Wichita Racquet Club, 1551 North Rock Road.
