The City of Wichita’s Inmate Labor Program is working hard this week to build a new fence around the horse corral for the Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit. The 7-member crew, including 5 inmates and 2 municipal court employees, will work from 9 AM–3 PM through the week until the fence is complete. The horses for the Mounted Patrol are kept at the Furley site, 14200 E. 77th Street N. The Inmate Labor Program is a cooperative program with the Winfield Correctional Facility. Each weekday, up to 20 inmates are brought into Wichita to work for the City doing a number of different tasks. Jobs completed by the program participants include electrical work, plumbing, janitorial services, mechanical repairs, and tree and grass planting. The Inmate Labor Program saves the City of Wichita at least $1 million each year based on the current minimum wage.
