Now that warmer weather is upon us, many Wichitans take the opportunity to drive the streets of Wichita with open vehicle-windows. This is also the time of year that the Wichita Police Department starts getting an increase in the number of complaints from residents regarding the loud volume of the music emanating from car stereos.
The Wichita Police Department wants to remind the motoring public that it is against the law to play a vehicle stereo loud enough that it can be heard at a distance of 50 feet or more away from the vehicle. If convicted, there is a $55 fine for this violation.
City ordinance 11.38.380 states, in part:
“No person operating a motor vehicle on a street, highway, alley, public park, parking lot, or driveway shall operate or permit the operation of any sound-amplification system from within the vehicle so that the sound is plainly audible at a distance of fifty or more feet from the vehicle. ‘Sound-amplification system’ means any radio, tape player, compact-disc player, loudspeaker or other electronic device used for the amplification of sound.”
Due to increased complaints from residents throughout the City, Wichita Police officers will increase the enforcement of this ordinance that impacts the quality of life of all of our citizens.
