Northwest Airlines Brings Better Air Service to Wichita

Date: June 14, 2001
Contact: Steve Flesher, Mid-Continent Airport
Phone: (316) 946-4700

Today the City of Wichita, in cooperation with Northwest Airlines, proudly announced an increased partnership effort to offer an additional daily non-stop flight to Mid-Continent Airport. This supplemental service to Memphis brings 4 non-stop direct flights from the service provider. It will begin on August 1, 2001.

The upgrade in service also means an upgrade in aircraft for Wichitans. The airline’s new 50-passenger Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ) will serve this new route. The CRJ has been recognized as the world’s quietest commercial aircraft. Memphis International Airport (MIA) is also an ideal hub for service, providing the opportunity to travel to many other destinations from that location. MIA was rated the number 1 on-time hub airport for 1999 and 2000 in a recent study by the Federal Aviation Administration.

“Northwest Airline’s decision to increase jet service is a big boost for Kansas travelers and the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport,” said Mayor Bob Knight. “We are very pleased Northwest recognizes the growth that Wichita is experiencing.”

The City of Wichita has recently heightened efforts to bring better air service to Wichita. Mayor Bob Knight appointed an Air Service Task Force to tackle these issues. This new service will be a benefit Wichita’s quality of air service by bringing both efficiency and comfort to business and leisure travelers – a core goal for the task force. Efforts are still continuing to bring more developments such as this to improve Mid-Continent’s air service quality for Wichita.
