Announcing the Wichita Route of the Olympic Torch Relay

On December 4, 2001 the Olympic Torch began its way through 46 states on its way to Salt Lake City in 2002. It will pass through Wichita on January 11, 2002. The Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) announced in October, the route the Olympic Flame will travel on its way to Salt Lake City, Utah, home of the XIX Olympic Winter Games. On Wednesday, January 2, the City of Wichita unveiled the 7.6 mile route that the 38 local torchbearers will run on January 11, 2002.

The Olympic Flame will travel more than 13,500 and more than 11,500 torchbearers will assist with carrying the flame during the 65-day Relay. In addition to torchbearers, the Olympic Flame will be transported by automobile, airplane, train, ship, dog sled, skier, horse-drawn sleigh, snowmobile, ice skaters, prairie schooner and other unique modes.
The City of Wichita and officials from Olympic sponsors Coca-Cola and Chevrolet want citizens to turnout for this historic event. Bring your flashlights and your enthusiasm as we cheer on our local torchbearers. On Friday, January 11, the torch will arrive in Wichita. The torch will arrive by train at 6:55 a.m. and the first runner will begin the relay at 7:06 a.m. from Cox Communications, traveling west on Douglas Avenue.
