Wichita Fire Department Issues Moratorium on Burning

Date: January 16, 2002
Contact: Chief Bob Thompson, Fire Department
E-mail: RThompson@wichita.gov
Phone: (316) 268-4441

With the lack of moisture, the City of Wichita is experiencing extremely dry conditions. These conditions combined with occasional high winds have created hazardous fire conditions.

The National Weather Service is not predicting any appreciable moisture in the short-term forecast, so effective immediately all open burning is prohibited in the City of Wichita. This ban also applies to all burning permits that have been previously issued.

The Wichita Fire Department also stresses the need for prevention and would ask all residents to use extreme caution when discarding cigarettes, using outdoor grills, or any other type of outdoor activity that could cause an initial spark or flame.
