On Tuesday, April 23, the City will issue a proclamation naming April 27 as Arbor Day. The City of Wichita and the Wichita Tree Trust had a great year in 2001 and are geared up for an even greater 2002. The vision, under the leadership of the Wichita City Council and the City Manager was the "Greening of Wichita" reforestation program. A "greening community" is one that is working towards a sustainable future – a healthy environment, a strong economy, and a high quality of life for all its citizens. We must change the attitude about planting more trees and convince citizens that community 'greening' is everyone's responsibility, not just the City of Wichita's. The Greening of Wichita's has had a fantastic first year. Here are some of their accomplishments:

The following is a list of just some of the events that have taken place in Wichita over the past year.

  • Received a tanker truck donated from Vulcan Chemical to water Wichita's trees. The tanker, with an estimated value of $100,000, is currently in use.

  • Received a $50,000 grant from the Lattner Foundation for planting trees. $25,000 of those funds will be used to plant trees at the new Art Museum Boulevard.

  • Received a Title 8 Federal Grant for plantings at Veterans Memorial Park. One hundred and thirty trees (130) were planted through these funds.

  • Provided trees for Habitat for Humanity Home building projects.

  • Received a grant from the National Tree Trust to partner with USD 259 to plant 400 trees through the Growing Together Program and provide 1,100 seedlings for the Community Tree Planting Program.

  • Organized 300 volunteers from United Way to help plant 300 trees at K-96 Park, 600 trees at Auburn Hills Park, and several at Historic Wellington Place.

What can you do? Join us in the celebration and plant a tree! For more information on the Greening of Wichita program, or if you would like to plant a free tree, contact Jeanne Goodvin at 268-4351. May the forest be with you!
