The Brooks Construction and Demolition Waste Landfill have recently opened a pilot scale yard waste composting area. Individuals and companies are able to bring grass clippings, leaves, and other vegetative yard waste to the site. This material will be processed into compost. Markets for the compost will be developed, so that the material is beneficially reused. Initially, the composting operations will occur on a one-half acre site. Future expansion will occur when the demand for disposal capacity and the compost product justify it. The normal disposal fee of $20 per ton, with a $15 minimum, applies. Composting is the natural breakdown (or decomposition) of organic materials. Composting produces humus, a dark soil-like material known as compost. Compost can be used as a soil amendment that increases a soil’s moisture holding capacity for sandy soils and makes nutrients more readily available to plants. It can also be used as mulch around trees and shrubs.
