Don’t Let Your Thanksgiving Celebration Go Up In Flames - Be Careful When Frying Turkey

The City of Wichita Fire Department would like to remind citizens who will be deep fat frying turkeys for Thanksgiving to use extreme caution. A turkey partially wet or completely wet, immersed in a pot of hot oil will produce a volatile reaction. This reaction may be great enough to cause the oil to come in contact with the open flame and cause a large fire.

The department recommends the following safety suggestions:

  • Keep children away from the cooking area.

  • Do not fry the turkey on a combustible surface such as a deck or inside the garage. Move away from the house.

  • Never put your face directly over the pot. Protect your hands and arms with gloves and long sleeve clothing or other protective type clothing.

  • Always use the suggested cooking type oil and remember, “Oil and Water don’t mix.”

The City of Wichita wishes everyone a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
