With temperatures expected to drop below 50 degrees tonight the cooler temperatures may cause some local residents to initiate the use of their furnace or space heaters. The Wichita Fire Department wants to remind all citizens to keep a clear distance between heating equipment and combustibles by removing all paper, clothing and other combustibles that may be stored around your furnace. Also sweep, vacuum or clean in and around your furnace. If you have a floor furnace, furniture, rugs and carpet in close proximity are major contributing factors to many floor furnace fires. Keep portable heaters away from curtains, beds and clothing. The department also wants to remind citizens that with the fall and winter season approaching now may be a good time to have your heating system checked by a professional maintenance service company.
