Original hand-pulled prints are much more than copies of an artwork. They are artworks in and of themselves. This unusual and much misunderstood art form will be the subject of an exhibit, "The Return of the Prairie Printmakers: the Saga Continues," opening May 30 at CityArts, 225 W. Lewis in Wichita.
"Return of the Prairie Printmakers" is curated by Doug Billings, himself an accomplished printmaker. Billings has invited a number of local artists - including Jane Eby, Scott Brown, Marc Bosworth, Diane Tigue, Leigh Leighton-Wallace, Brad Hart, John Boyd and many others - to contribute work to the display which will highlight a variety of examples of printmaking. The medium enjoys a rich heritage in Kansas, and historically its practitioners include William Dickerson and Birger Sandzen.
The exhibit will be on display through June 20. An artists' reception is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. May 30 at CityArts. The reception will mark the debut of The Bohemians, a singles group which offers a series of special events to introduce singles to the arts scene and each other. The event is free and open to the public.
