Girl Scout day camps would not be the same without thinking of Smokey the Bear. For 35 years the Wichita Fire Department has been a part of the scouts summer program by providing a guest appearance of Smokey the Bear. This “World Famous Bear” will make appearances at all the Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains campsites, spreading the word about campfire safety, fire prevention and “stranger danger” reaching over 3,000 girl scouts. “The visits have become a tradition as well as an important part of the week’s program says Cheryl Schmeidle, Day Camp Administrator.” “Smokey” will visit the Girl Scout Center Camp located at 360 Lexington Road on Wednesday, June 11, at 9 a.m., and Camp Starwood located at 7800 S. 103rd Street West on Thursday, June 12 at 9 a.m.
