A new study published in AviationDaily ranks Mid-Continent (ICT) as the 19th fastest-growing airport in the country, ranking higher than larger airports in cities such as Sacramento, Calif., Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Rochester, N.Y. “We think this speaks to the potential of our airport market,” said Bailis Bell, Director of Airports. “Mid-Continent traffic grew at a time when other airports were seeing declines.” The study, which drew data from the United States Department of Transportation, compared passenger numbers at airports nationwide from 2000 to those from 2003. It also compared average fares. Passenger volumes at Mid-Continent, Kansas’ largest airport, grew 17 percent from September 2000 to September 2003, according to the study. With an average fare of $131.40, Mid-Continent offered lower fares than 57 percent of the airports listed on the study’s Top 50 Passenger Growth Airports list. The growth occurred at a time when many airports saw major decreases in passenger travel - some declines were as large as 67 percent, the study revealed. Tulsa, Okla., Dallas, Boston and San Francisco are just a few of the cities with airports posting passenger declines. Study follows here.
