In honor and in tribute to the memory of former City Manager Chris Cherches, flags at City facilities will be lowered beginning today. The flags will remain lowered until his interment. Cherches served as City Manager for the City of Wichita for more than 18 years. He had been a professional city manager for more than 40 years. He was active in professional and community organizations including the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), the Heartland Innovation Group, the League of Kansas Municipalities, the Kansas World Trade Center, the United Way and the Literacy Resources Board of Directors. Mayor Carlos Mayans called Cherches, "a true professional who loved Wichita." Cherches was a recipient of several national awards including the State and Local Innovations Award from the Ford Foundation, the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Lady Bird Johnson Award and the Buford M. Watson, Jr. Award for Excellence in Public Management. Under his tenure, Wichita has twice been designated an All America City and received numerous national recognitions. "This is a sad day for Wichita," said City Manager George Kolb. "However, I am uplifted by the fact that Chris’ contributions to Wichita were enormous. In the brief time that I knew him, I recognized how significant his impact on Wichita was." Back to Top
