Mayor Carlos Mayans, Sonia Greteman, Steve Flesher, Jessica Johnson and Raleigh Drennan. | The City of Wichita received recognition from the City and County Communication and Marketing Association (3CMA). In a national competition, the City was presented with the coveted first place Savvy Award for outstanding marketing campaigns for the Airport’s Ditch the Drive campaign launched in 2003. The awards were presented at the organization’s 2004 national convention in Denver, CO. Today, the City Council recognized Marketing Services Director Jessica Johnson, Air Service Director Steve Flesher, and creative team Sonia Greteman and Raleigh Drennan of Greteman Group for their outstanding work on the project.
In reasoning on why Wichita stood out on top, judges said, "This campaign very clearly identified its target audience and then went after it in a big way. Outstanding use was made of the budget, resulting in a creative approach. The campaign was cohesive and all aspects worked together." In the competition, the City competed against municipalities of similar size including Tallahassee, Florida; Norfolk, Virginia; Tempe, Arizona and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to name just a few.
This is the fourth award in four years that Wichita has received from this organization. In 2001, the City of Wichita received the "President’s Award" and the "Savvy" for demonstrating the best of the best in marketing and communications for marketing programs highlighting revitalization efforts and fire department recruitment of minorities. In 2002, the City received the "Savvy" for the employee-based Intranet site and an "Award of Excellence" for the new City bus dedication.
The Savvy Awards are a prestigious national competition. The awards recognize outstanding local government achievements in communications, public sector marketing, and citizen-government relationships. The Savvys salute skilled and effective city and county government professionals who have creatively planned and carried out successful innovations in these fields. There are over 1000 cities that are members and this year’s awards program received over 700 entries.
