AirTran Airway’s Non-Stop Orlando Flight Takes Off Today!

Date: November 19, 2004
Contact: Bailis Bell, Airport Director
Phone: (316) 946-4700

Mid-Continent Airport’s (ICT) much-anticipated direct flight to Orlando (MCO) through AirTran Airways (FL) began service today. Airport personnel and passengers celebrated this landmark event with cake, punch and a few surprises. Travelers through Mid-Continent Airport can enjoy this new service departing Wichita every Saturday on AirTran (FL) at 1:22 PM, arriving in Orlando at 5 PM. That flight will then depart Orlando every Saturday at 5:40 PM and arrive in Wichita at 7:50 PM.

At the announcement of this service, Mayor Carlos Mayan had this to say: "We are pleased that AirTran has found the strength in the market in Wichita. This broadened service will help travelers from Wichita, the State of Kansas and beyond, travel to another top destination point through Mid-Continent Airport," he said. Bailis Bell, Airport Director added: "This is a fantastic addition to our current service and as more people continue to fly AirTran, we look forward to expanded service to Orlando and other destinations."

AirTran Airways has already offered very reasonable rates of only $99 one way to Orlando. We are pleased to offer these additional frequencies for our customers," said Kevin Healy, AirTran Airways' vice president of planning and sales at the launch announcement on August 5. "This increase in service gives consumers more flexibility and convenience when planning travel, as well as more options for affordable fares on popular routes."

Much of the growth at Mid-Continent Airport has happened because of a regional economic development effort called "Fair Fares." This public/private partnership began in December 2001 with the intent to bring low-cost carriers to Mid-Continent Airport. At that time, ICT had non-stop service to 7 of the catchment area’s top 20 destinations. In the past three years, the airport has added direct service to three new destinations, now at 10 of the top 20 locations. That direct service now includes Las Vegas (#1 Wichita destination), Chicago, Phoenix, Houston, Orlando, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Atlanta, St. Louis, Denver, and Minneapolis/St. Paul.
