City of Wichita crews will be working with a large number of contracted forces to begin the massive task of picking up limbs from street right-of way and removing potentially hazardous hanging limbs, as a result of last week's ice storm. This is the beginning of a massive effort to clean up everything possible within the next seven days.
City crews worked through last weekend and were able to open City streets to traffic. Crews are scheduled to begin working early Friday morning, commencing at Broadway, and working both east and west from this line. "Broadway is a good beginning point, because it runs through the center of the hardest hit areas, and allows us to move crews east and west simultaneously", said Larry Henry, Maintenance Engineer for the City. "We plan to progress as quickly as possible to clean up debris that has been stacked in the right-of-way. Citizens in developed residential areas are encouraged to bring their limbs to the right-of-way so that City crews can pick up as much as possible in one sweep."
The City and County free dump sites are currently available and open to the Public. The response of citizens taking limbs to these sites has been very positive and the City appreciates the work of citizens helping with this cleanup. The City and County dumpsites are located at:
- Brooks Landfill Site: 4100 N. West Street
- Sewage Treatment Plant: 2305 E. 57th Street South (57th St. & Hydraulic)
- The Sedgwick County Yard located at 47th Street South and West Street
- The Sedgwick County Yard located at 10530 E. 37th St. N (between Webb and Greenwich)
- The Andale Yard, 5858 N. 247th Street West
- The Clonmel Yard, 17500 West 71st Street South
- The Kansas Coliseum, 1229 E. 85th Street (west of the salt dome)
- Big Ditch (specific site), South of 63rd St. south and East of Meridian
The City will provide periodic updates of the cleanup effort.
