Wichita Fire Department Concerned About Fire Fatalities - "Smoking While Using Oxygen"

Date: June 23, 2005
Contact: Captain Brad Crisp, Fire Department
E-mail: BCrisp@wichita.gov
Phone: (316) 268-4585

The Wichita Fire Department is concern over the number of fire deaths and injuries that have occurred in the City of Wichita.

Over the last three years the city has experienced 4 fire deaths and 2 serious injuries that have been contributed to citizens smoking cigarettes while using oxygen for medical purposes.

The department wants to remind all citizens who smoke and use oxygen that this is a dangerous situation and under the right mixture of fuel, heat and oxygen, an explosion and fire can occur.

If you do smoke or have family members who smoke follow the "Smokers need watchers" motto said Arson Investigator Captain Brad Crisp.

  • Watch any smoker who is drinking, or is sick in bed and might be smoking.
  • Watch older or handicapped person who smokes.
  • Watch other family members who smoke. They can set themselves or the house on fire.

Please contact the Wichita Fire Department at 268-4441 for any and all of your fire safety needs and concerns.
