Wichita Mayor Carlos Mayans has been elected to the advisory board of the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM). Mayans was elected by his peers. The 30-member board helps guide and direct the organization.
"It’s a prestigious organization, and this is an equally prestigious position," Thomas Cochran, executive director of the USCM. The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan organization of the nation's 1183 U.S. cities with populations of 30,000 or more. Each USCM city is represented by its top elected official.
"I am honored to serve in a key leadership role for such an influential organization, one primarily dedicated to helping citizens through improving cities," Mayor Mayans said. "Being elected by my peers further enhances the honor."
The primary roles of USCM, based in Washington DC, include:
-
Promoting the development of effective national urban/suburban policy;
-
Strengthening federal-city relationships;
-
Ensuring that federal policy meets urban needs;
-
Providing mayors with leadership and management tools; and
