At the request of City of Wichita Animal Services officials, the Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the prosecution of a person who severely injured a puppy. "My hope is that the reward will motivate someone to talk," Dennis Graves, the City of Wichita’s Animal Services Supervisor said. "My experience has been that people who do these things are not quiet about it." On Monday, August 1, a black, mixed-breed puppy was discovered by an Animal Services officer in a trash dumpster at Earhart Environmental Magnet Elementary School, 4401 Arkansas. The puppy suffered lacerations, chemical burns and a fractured leg. He was malnourished and dehydrated. His paws and front legs had been wired together and wrapped around his head, with one paw inserted into his mouth limiting breathing. "I have been in Animal Control since 1982, and have witnessed countless examples of cruelty and neglect," Graves said. "Deliberate and malicious cruelty as is evident with this puppy is inexcusable. Once freed, the animal stood up and wagged its tail. Amazingly, he was still friendly toward people." The puppy is recovering under veterinarian care. The Animal Services division is seeking public assistance about information related to this incident. Any person with information is encouraged to call 268-8378. Back to Top
