In a press conference today, Wichita Mayor Carlos Mayans, City Council members, Red Cross officials and local religious leaders outlined key opportunities for the citizens of Wichita to assist in the relief effort for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Red Cross continues to be a major organizer of relief efforts. Citizens are encouraged to make contributions to their local Red Cross chapter. Mayor Carlos Mayans is asking local churches to organize a special collection Sunday, September 4 to assist Red Cross disaster relief.
Details of a local community relief benefit are taking shape. This event will be held 7 PM, Thursday, September 8 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. There will be a baseball game featuring Wichita Wranglers staff and the City of Wichita’s Police Department. Other activities will be announced as they are confirmed. This benefit will provide citizens with an opportunity to help fund Red Cross relief efforts related to Hurricane Katrina.
American Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by voluntary donations of time and money. Citizens can help victims of the hurricane and thousands of other disasters across the country each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, which enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counseling and other assistance to those in need. Call 1-800-HELP NOW or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish). Contributions to the Disaster Relief Fund may be sent to the Midway-Kansas Chapter, P.O. Box 3726, Wichita, KS 67201. Internet users can make a secure online contribution by visiting www.redcross.org.
