The City of Wichita Transit Services saw a significant increase in ridership for the month of August. In August of 2004, Transit officials counted approximately 153,500 trips through the electronic farebox system. For August 2005, it rose to 184,000. This translates to a 20% ridership increase for the month. "That amount for transit is high for any month, particularly one that did not have schools in session for the entire month," said Jay Banasiak, Wichita Transit Director for the City of Wichita. "Our services have always been a good value for citizens and that is certainly true right now as fuel prices rise," he said. Transit has also seen renewed interest in the free Wichita Regional Rideshare Program. Many people have noticed the existing blue signage throughout the city, including highways coming into town. This service uses a computer program and take time, trip origin and destination information to match interested participants. All information is confidential and preferences such as gender, smoking or non-smoking riders and children are considered. For more information, call Transit at 265-7221.
