At today's City Council meeting, the Mayor and members of the City Council formally recognized our military and veterans. Attached is the official proclamation that was presented to the following three people, on behalf of our military and veterans in Wichita:

  • Colonel Jerry P. Martinez, vice commander, 22nd Air Refueling Wing, McConnell Air Force Base, Kan. He is responsible for providing world class air refueling to meet presidential and national objectives around the globe.

  • Tom Sanders, Director of the Federal Department of Veterans Affairs, Wichita Division. The Wichita Regional Office administers veterans benefits to nearly 27,000 veterans throughout the State of Kansas.

  • Carroll Everist, retired from the U.S. Army. This Veteran, served the Army from 1949 to 1954 for Fort Riley Kansas during the Korean War. He was a prisoner of war and the only surviving member of his team that was captured. Mr. Everist received the Purple Heart with one Oakleaf Cluster. As the Mayor pointed out, his story is one that should be told because it helps us today realize the sacrifice so many have made so that we can live the life we live today as United States citizens.
