City of Wichita officials are scheduled to participate in the 2006 National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional Cities Conference March 11-15 in Washington DC.
The NLC Congressional Cities Conference is an opportunity for government leaders to exchange ideas and valuable experiences that benefit the public. NLC is the oldest and largest national organization for American cities. It serves as a resource and advocate for 18,000 cities, towns, and villages that collectively serve 225 million people. More than 2,500 elected officials from across the country will attend.
City of Wichita officials attending the NLC conference include several City Council members and City Manager George Kolb. City Council members Bob Martz, Carl Brewer, Sue Schlapp and Paul Gray serve on NLC committees. Martz is a member of the Human Development Steering Committee; Brewer, the Community and Economic Development Steering Committee; Schlapp, the Community and Economic Development Committee; Gray, the Transportation Infrastructure & Services Committee. City Attorney Gary Rebenstorf is attending the conference as sitting president of the International Municipal Lawyers Association.
The Congressional City Conference is NLC's annual legislative conference designed to inform local officials about federal priorities affecting cities and towns and initiate NLC's grassroots advocacy work with the current Congress and administration. City officials will discuss various significant and timely issues for cities, including economic development, disaster preparedness, immigration, housing and telecommunications.
The National League of Cities provides numerous benefits to its network of state municipal leagues. The National League of Cities:
