City of Wichita officials are scheduled to participate in the 2006 National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional Cities Conference March 11-15 in Washington DC.

The NLC Congressional Cities Conference is an opportunity for government leaders to exchange ideas and valuable experiences that benefit the public. NLC is the oldest and largest national organization for American cities. It serves as a resource and advocate for 18,000 cities, towns, and villages that collectively serve 225 million people. More than 2,500 elected officials from across the country will attend.

City of Wichita officials attending the NLC conference include several City Council members and City Manager George Kolb. City Council members Bob Martz, Carl Brewer, Sue Schlapp and Paul Gray serve on NLC committees. Martz is a member of the Human Development Steering Committee; Brewer, the Community and Economic Development Steering Committee; Schlapp, the Community and Economic Development Committee; Gray, the Transportation Infrastructure & Services Committee. City Attorney Gary Rebenstorf is attending the conference as sitting president of the International Municipal Lawyers Association.

The Congressional City Conference is NLC's annual legislative conference designed to inform local officials about federal priorities affecting cities and towns and initiate NLC's grassroots advocacy work with the current Congress and administration.  City officials will discuss various significant and timely issues for cities, including economic development, disaster preparedness, immigration, housing and telecommunications.

The National League of Cities provides numerous benefits to its network of state municipal leagues. The National League of Cities:

  • advocates for cities and towns in Washington, D.C. through full-time lobbying and grassroots campaigns;

  • promotes cities and towns through an aggressive media and communications program that draws attention to city issues and enhances the national image of local government;

  • provides programs and services that give local leaders the tools and knowledge to better serve their communities;

  • keeps leaders informed of critical issues that affect municipalities and warrant action by local officials;

  • strengthens leadership skills by offering numerous training and education programs;

  • recognizes municipal achievements by gathering and promoting examples of best practices and honoring cities and towns with awards for model programs and initiatives;

  • partners with state leagues to supplement resources and strengthen the voice of local government in the nation’s capital and all state capitols; and,

  • provides opportunities for involvement and networking to help city officials seek ideas, share solutions, and find common ground for the future.
