The media is invited to see the new City Hall Atrium as Wichita Police Department officials work during a practice session on Friday. City Hall’s new Atrium will open to the public officially on Monday, April 17. Starting then, the public will have to go through a screening process before entering City Hall.
The Atrium connects the City Hall Parking Garage with City Hall. It now extends 17 feet further north and south to fit the equipment and personnel needed for increased security at City Hall. Wichita Police Department now have a special City Hall Security Team that consists of nine armed guards, six screeners and one security supervisor. This staffing level is needed to cover City Hall 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. They will be operating two X-ray machines, two walk through metal detectors, two employee portals and six turnstiles.
The Atrium opening marks the first phase of a multi-phase City Hall First Floor Remodeling project. City Council approved this project on June 5, 2005. The project was designed by architectural firm Schaffer Johnson Cox Frey, and Commerce Construction Services, Inc. served as the general contractor.
