The City of Wichita has contracted with Cornejo & Sons, Inc. to reconstruct Hillside from Kellogg to 3rd Street, to add a center turn lane, with left-turn provisions at Douglas, 1st and 2nd. The project is slated to begin Monday, Aug. 21, 2006. It is projected to be completed by April 15, 2007, weather permitted.
The intersections of Douglas, 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Hillside will be restricted to one lane in each direction. No left turns will be allowed. Access to properties adjacent to the project will be maintained.
Because this project affects traffic flow on a major street, the contractor is allowed to work a six-day workweek, beginning as early as 6:30 a.m. and stopping around 6 p.m.
Construction will be performed in four phases. During all four phases, two-way traffic will be maintained on Hillside; intermittent flagging of traffic may be necessary during working hours.
- Phase 1 will be water line construction on the west side of Hillside from 3rd Street to Waterman. Storm sewer will be constructed from Waterman to English, on the east side of Hillside.
- Phase 2 will be street construction on the east lanes of Hillside between Kellogg and English. Water line work will continue on the west side of Hillside from 3rd Street to Waterman.
- Phase 3 will be storm sewer and street construction of the west lanes of Hillside from Kellogg to 3rd Street.
- Phase 4 will consist of storm sewer and street construction of the east lanes of Hillside from English to 3rd Street.
