Pawnee, from Broadway to Palisade, will be widened from four to five lanes beginning today, Oct. 17. The $1.6 Million project, which will include medians and left turn lanes, is expected to be complete in March 2007. Due to traffic flow on a major street, the contractor will work a six-day workweek. Contractors begin working around 6:30 AM and stop around 6:00 PM.
Construction will be performed in four phases to lessen the impact on neighborhood traffic flow:
Phase 1a: The existing medians from Main Street to just west of Broadway will be removed and temporary asphalt pavement will be installed. Access will be provided to the park entrance and the police station, with drive entrances constructed one-half at a time. One lane of traffic in each direction will be available on Pawnee. Left turns will be permitted.
Phase 1b: Storm sewer will be constructed in the south two lanes of Pawnee. New concrete pavement, curb, gutter and sidewalks will be installed, as well as the south half of the new medians. The south two lanes of Pawnee will be closed. One lane of traffic in each direction will be placed on the north lanes of Pawnee. Left turns will be permitted. Access will be provided to the park entrance and the police station.
Phase 2: Pavement reconstruction of the north two lanes of Pawnee will occur. Storm sewers will be constructed at the intersections of Market, Main and Water. Sidewalks will be constructed on portions of the north side of Pawnee. The north two will be closed, and one lane of traffic in each direction will be placed on the south two lanes of Pawnee. Left turns will be permitted.
Phase 3: Installation of pavement markings and landscaping. Grass areas disturbed by construction will be restored with same seed/sod and existing irrigation systems.
Pavers, Inc., a Salina-based firm, is the contractor.
