The City’s Environmental Services Department is pleased to announce that the WATER Center, the City’s groundwater treatment facility for the Gilbert-Mosley Project, has been awarded a $10,000 Recreational Trails grant by the Federal Highway Administration and the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks. The WATER Center is partnering with Eagle Scout candidate, Nathan Fisher, to design and install an interpretive nature trail and corresponding trail guide. The grant funding will offset the materials and printing costs of the trail markers and nature guide. "With its education center, fountains, waterfalls, and aquaria, the WATER Center has helped redefined the image of Herman Hill Park. The interpretive trail guide will showcase the park's natural history and encourage the visitors to explore one of South Wichita's best kept secrets," said Libby Albers, Water Center Coordinator for City of Wichita Environmental Services. “The main purpose of the Eagle project is to educate the public about local ecology of the area of the WATER Center,” said Eagle Scout candidate, Nathan Fisher, a sophomore at Bishop Carroll High School and the son of Brian and Elaine Fisher. Fisher also hopes that, “My part of the WATER Center exhibit will be enjoyed by visitors to the park who can stroll along the sidewalk, take their time reading and observing the ecology of the area. Visitors will benefit from the illustrated trail guide. While the public can currently attend lectures inside the WATER Center, my trail guide will provide the needed information describing wildlife affected by the WATER Center.” Fisher will begin work on the trail in early 2007. The interpretive trail and trail guide will be available by the end of the 2007 year. Back to Top
