A 13-year-old male is under arrest for vandalizing 28 brand new light fixtures on pedestrian bridges under construction at the Keeper of the Plains River Corridor Improvement Project.
The Wednesday vandalism was captured on security video installed at the site as part of the safety/security system. The video is monitored and recorded 24 hours a day.
Repair of the new fixtures is estimated to cost in excess of $3,000.
City officials are in the process of installing such safety/security systems at other facilities to address vandalism of public property and gang activity. Specific plans are not being disclosed, but these systems will continue to be more common.
“City staff knows that the systems will help control losses,” said Stan Breitenbach, Special Projects Engineer. “Eventually, vandalism of public facilities will go the way of crank calls after caller ID was deployed. When you remove the anonymity, people think twice before committing vandalism. In addition, safety in and near these facilities is improved for all.”
