New Rider Amenities at Benches and Shelter
Waiting for the bus will be a more comfortable experience for Wichita Transit riders with improvements scheduled for next month.
In late August, Wichita Transit will continue with Phase II of the Bus Passenger Bench and Shelter Installation project. The project improves rider amenities by installing new bus benches and shelters throughout the city.
Phase II will focus on bus routes throughout the city, including East Harry, East Lincoln, Central, Broadway, Main, Rock, Meridian, and Riverside. The project involves all six council districts and the current WT bus routes.
The new bus and shelter locations will be strategically placed on bus routes to maximize the efficient use of city resources. In choosing locations, WT analyzed the number of people boarding at that location and surveyed riders. It also used major intersection locations to determine where the new amenities would be placed.
The benches and shelters will be a decorative addition to the proposed sites. The benches are attractive, custom made pieces that will be bolted to cement pads for safety and security. The shelters will add additional waiting space for riders and also protect them from the elements. WT also maintains the cleanliness around the benches and shelters.
Phase I of the project will be completed in the beginning of August. The cost of Phase I was $250,000, which was funded by 80% federal funds and 20% local funds. These funds allowed the City of Wichita to place 82 bus benches and 18 shelters throughout the city. Phase II is projected to cost $325,000 for 155 benches and 10 shelters.
Phase II is expected to start in late August, and to be completed by February 2008.
