Two major projects scheduled for 2008 will significantly impact 13th Street traffic between Broadway and Bitting Street in North Riverside. The intersection of 13th Street at Broadway will be reconstructed, and the 13th Street (Minisa) Bridge at the Little Arkansas River will be extensively rehabilitated.
The bridge reconstruction project will require the closure of 13th Street from January 2008 to August 2008. It will provide slightly wider driving lanes and new support structure, while preserving the historic elements of the 75-year old bridge (Carthalite images of Native Americans and buffaloes, and brick paving).
The 13th & Broadway intersection will widen both Broadway and 13th to add protected left-turn lanes in all four directions. During the widening project, traffic through the intersection will be limited to one lane in each direction, with no left turns allowed.
City staff met Tuesday night (October 23) with approximately 30 representatives of USD 259 and businesses in the vicinity of the projects to discuss detours, project timelines, and related concerns.
Traffic on 13th St between Waco and Amidon will be detoured on Waco to 21st Street North, west to Amidon, and south on Amidon back to 13th. Pedestrian traffic on 13th will be detoured to 11th Street via Bitting and Lewellen.
Access to North High from Waco during the bridge project will be enhanced by the addition of protected left-turns from Waco. Work will begin on both projects in early 2008 with projected completion in August 2008.
