The latest construction closings associated with the Kellogg/Rock Road Interchange project have been announced. Armour Street south of Kellogg is scheduled to close for road construction on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The project calls for reconstruction of the frontage road intersection, located a half-mile west of Rock Road, as well as Armour south of Kellogg. The street is scheduled to reopen to traffic at the end of January 2008. Construction on the Kellogg and Rock Road interchange began in February 2007. The project consists of freeway and frontage road reconstruction from Governeour to east of Rock Road. The first phase of work was construction of the north frontage road and reconstruction of Rock Road. The current, second phase is construction of the south frontage road, South Armour and the east half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg. “Heavy spring and early-summer rains put the project four weeks behind schedule,” says Jim Armour, City Engineer. “But our contractor is making good progress now, and we are only two weeks behind schedule at this point.” The third phase of the project will be the west half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg, and the mainline roadway including a bridge over Armour. When completed, the Kellogg freeway will pass over Armour and under Rock Road, and there will be no traffic signals for 13 miles through Wichita, from 111th Street West to Cypress, near the Kansas turnpike. The Kellogg/Rock Road project is expected to be complete in Spring 2010. About 70,000 motorists travel daily through the Kellogg/Rock Road intersection. There are 250 businesses in proximity to the construction, and access is being maintained to all of them as the work takes place. The speed limit in the construction zone is 35 miles per hour. Motorists are encouraged to drive courteously and observe the directional signs. Back to Top
