On Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, Longfellow, which is one block west of Rock Road, will be closed south of Kellogg. The intersection of Longfellow and the south frontage road for Kellogg will be reconstructed. It is scheduled to reopen to traffic on Jan. 11, 2008.

Construction on the Kellogg and Rock Road interchange began in February 2007. The project consists of freeway and frontage road reconstruction from Governeour to east of Rock Road.

The first phase of work was construction of the north frontage road and reconstruction of Rock Road.

The current, second phase is construction of the south frontage road, South Armour and the east half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg.

The third phase of the project will be the west half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg, and the mainline roadway including a bridge over Armour.

The Kellogg freeway at Rock Road will pass over Armour and under Rock Road. It is expected to be complete in Spring 2010. With the improvements, there will be no traffic signals for 13 miles through Wichita - from 111th Street West to Cypress, near the Kansas turnpike.

About 70,000 motorists travel daily through the Kellogg/Rock Road intersection. There are 250 businesses in close proximity to the construction, and access is being maintained to all of them during construction. The construction zone speed limit is 35 miles per hour; motorists are encouraged to drive courteously and observe directional signs.
