Success would mean lower airfares to west

The City of Wichita, Affordable Airfares for Kansas, Wichita Airport Authority, and Sedgwick County have launched an e-mail campaign to try to bring low-fare carrier Frontier Airlines to Wichita.

“One of the top priorities for the City of Wichita is to have access to low fares to western destinations from Mid-Continent Airport, and now we have an opportunity to make that a reality,” said Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer. “Lower western airfares will enhance our quality of life, and help to improve our economy.”

Fares to the west have more than doubled in the past few years without a low-fare carrier.  Frontier Airlines recently announced it plans to expand service and has contracted with a new operating subsidiary to support Frontier’s network.  Wichita is in competition with more than 60 cities for this service.

“The success of the Affordable Air Fares for Kansas campaign last year proved that affordable airfares are a top priority for the economic growth of the region – and the state,” said Bryan Derreberry, President and CEO of the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce. “With low-cost carrier AirTran continuing to serve east-bound routes, Frontier’s addition to the market would give our businesses a competitive advantage. And, it would give our citizens more options for leisure travel.”

The Frontier e-mail campaign is designed to appeal to the general public, taking advantage of a wildlife theme used by Frontier on the tails of its aircraft. “Humphrey” the bison, is one of Frontier Airlines’ “spokesanimals.”

“Since the bison (or buffalo) is the State animal of Kansas, this campaign has been appropriately named to show, in a lighthearted way, Wichita’s commitment to Frontier and to reflect Frontier’s commitment to service and humor,” said Air Service Manager Valerie Wise. “This is our opportunity to have low western fares at Mid-Continent Airport, and it is essential to show Frontier officials our overwhelming support.”
