Environmental Services had a full-page ad in The Wichita Eagle on Saturday, April 21 to give Wichitans tips on how to make Wichita more beautiful through environmentally friendly means. The following is a sample of items in the insert.
Change the world, start by changing a few light bulbs.
• If every American home replaced just one light bulb with a compact fluorescent bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 2.5 million homes for a year and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of nearly 800,000 cars.  By changing to a Compact Fluorescent Bulb – you can:
o Save $30 or more in energy costs over each bulb’s lifetime, and it will last 10 times longer or 5-8 years.
o Save about 3/4 of the energy used by a conventional bulb
o Cut air-conditioning bills - Each bulb generates 70 percent less heat, so they’re safer to operate.

What You Can Do for Water Quality in the Arkansas River:
• Water quality in the Arkansas River is better then it has been for more then half a century. The City monitors it throughout the year. There were over 14,000 fish and 37 species of fish counted in 2006.
• Remember, all water running off the land in and around Wichita goes into the Arkansas River.
• Do not pour old medications down toilets.

What You Can Do to Conserve Water:
• Drinking water is precious.  It takes a lot of time, effort, energy and other resources to deliver safe drinking water to your faucet so that you can easily use it whenever you want.  Here are ways to conserve it:
• Wash full loads in the laundry washer or the dishwasher.
• Buy, install and use a low-flow showerhead.
• 20% of all toilets leak. Change toilet flapper valves every two years.

What You Can Do for Air Quality
• Environmental Services Air Quality Section works to reduce air pollution in Sedgwick County. This is accomplished by working cooperatively with other agencies and the public to control air pollution and prevent poor air quality.
• Refuel your car after 6 PM.
• Cut your grass after 6 PM.
• Don’t idle your vehicle engine unnecessarily. Turn off the engine.
• Carpool or use public transportation.
