**** City of Wichita Official Statement ****
The City Council will review the proposed Fraternal Order of the Police (FOP) wage agreement at the Council meeting on May 8, 2007. A tentative agreement was reached between the FOP and City negotiators on April 17. The FOP membership will continue to vote on this contract today. The FOP represents over 600 Police Officers, Detectives and Sergeants. Under the proposed agreement, wages would increase 4% annually in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In addition, nearly two thirds of the officers that are not at top wage would continue to receive 2.5% merit increases each year for a total of a 6.5% increase. The pay for Police Sergeants would be boosted an additional 2.5% each year. Other benefit enhancements were negotiated, including additional education pay allowances and an increase in the clothing allowance. The City budget has over $8 million budgeted for wage increases for FOP members through 2009. This package deal will cost an additional $6.5 million over the budgeted amount during the three-year contract. The City of Wichita values the police department and holds with high regard the services they provide. The City of Wichita management agrees that this contract is more than fair and positive for our officers and the community.
