The Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) will help the Central Kansas Podiatry Associates (CKPA) collect 3,000 pairs of gently worn shoes for those in need. The shoes will be collected from the public at four area high schools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 - National Make a Difference Day.
The four area high schools are:
• North High, 1437 N. Rochester;
• East High, 2301 E. Douglas Ave.;
• Northwest High, 1220 N. Tyler Road;
• Wichita Collegiate, 9115 East 13th Street North
The Mayor’s Youth Council selected this service project after being contacted by the Marketing Director for CKPA, Sally Stump. Dr. Benjamin Weaver and Dr. Paul Bassi, of the CKPA, are leading the campaign to collect and distribute the shoes.
“We see a lot of patients with inadequate shoes and we wanted to give back to the community by collecting shoes for the less fortunate,” Stump said. “Our goal is 3,000 pairs of shoes and socks for children and adults.”
Youth Mayor Marcus McNeal, a senior at Heights High School, said: “Our mission is to develop student leaders and help solve community problems facing youth. This was an easy project to support and we hope the public will support it, too.”
MYC members will also donate their own shoes and hold collection drives at selected high schools between Oct. 20-24. The public drive on October 25th will be the final collection day. Shoes will be delivered to the CKPA office at 933 N. Topeka St. An event flyer is attached.
