13th Street to Close for One Week Friday Oct. 31 until Friday Nov. 7

Road construction work will force a one-week closing of 13th Street between Santa Fe and Barwise beginning Friday, Oct. 31.

The affected area is just east of the new elevated central railroad corridor bridge. During the closure, Dondlinger & Sons Construction Company, Inc., will lower the at-grade crossing to match the new roadway and replace the pavement.

Re-opening is anticipated on Friday, Nov. 7. Traffic will be detoured to Murdock during the closure.

Traffic on 13th Street has been reduced to one lane in each direction at this location since September for removal and replacement on the north side of the street.  When re-opened, 13th Street will continue to carry two lanes of traffic until January 2009, while work is done on the south side.

When completed, 13th Street will allow full-height truck clearance of 15 feet, six inches beneath the new railroad bridge. It will also provide four new lanes of concrete pavement, and sidewalks on each side.

This work is part of the City’s downtown Central Railroad Corridor Project that includes new railroad bridges at First, Second, Central, Murdock, and Thirteenth Streets, plus improvements at the Douglas Avenue Bridge.

Work on the Central Corridor began on April 18, 2005, to elevate railroad tracks onto new bridges, while maintaining vehicular traffic below. Final completion, expected in fall of 2009, will noticeably improve downtown traffic flow.
