WPD conducts field sobriety tests on volunteer drinkers Officers from the Wichita Police Department and a group of volunteer drinkers will demonstrate the effects of alcohol consumption during field sobriety and breath alcohol tests Tuesday, Dec. 30. The exercise is part of Wichita radio station T-95’s 15th annual “Don’t Drink and Drive Show.” It takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Patrol West Community Police Office, 601 N. West, Suite #208. “The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the effects of alcohol on people who drive,” said Lt. Chris Bannister, WPD Special Operations Unit. “We want to help drive home the point that people who drive should not drink.” A group of volunteers will begin consuming alcohol at 9 a.m. The volunteers will then undergo field sobriety testing to demonstrate how alcohol impairs one’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. “The Wichita Police Department is committed to getting drunk drivers off the streets,” Bannister said. “This demonstration will show how alcohol impairs the reflexes of drivers.” The five volunteers include former DUI prosecutor Danny Saville. He and the other volunteers each will be given a regulated amount of alcohol to show a variety of effects on gender, weight, and tolerance levels. Questions about the T-95 “Don’t Drink and Drive” show may be directed to WPD Officer Rick Baker at 316-644-0810 or Danny Saville at 316-393-9393. Back to Top
