Mayor Carl Brewer announced on Monday that the Wichita City Council and City Manager candidate Robert Layton will begin negotiations regarding Wichita’s top administrative post. Layton is a veteran public administrator, who is currently the City Manager of Urbandale, Iowa, near Des Moines. The negotiations will include Slavin Consultants, the firm hired to manage the City Manager search process. Brewer, Vice Mayor Sue Schlapp and Council Member Paul Gray will also participate in the contract talks. “We’d like to get this done as quickly as possible,” Brewer said. Layton, who was in Wichita on Monday, said he was ready to continue his career as a public servant in Wichita. He’s served in Urbandale since 1984 after launching his career in Kansas City, Mo. and Des Moines. His resume is attached. “I’m excited about the opportunity,” Layton said. ”I’m eager to move forward with the Mayor and the Council’s agenda.” The Wichita City Manager oversees 3,100 employees, a $500 million annual budget and a $2.4 billion Capital Improvement Program. The City Manager position has been vacant since Jan. 2, when former City Manager George Kolb resigned. Dr. Ed Flentje served as interim City Manager until mid July. Scott Moore currently serves as interim Wichita City Manager. Robert Layton Resume
