The City of Wichita began the process to open the interchange on Nov. 4 when two lanes were opened. Left turns had been prohibited since 2007 to increase traffic capacity.

Traffic on the Kellogg freeway will still be limited to two of the three lanes until both ends of the construction are complete later in the year. The Armour intersection with the frontage roads will be opened during the week of Nov. 16.

“This is a significant step to restore all movements at this important intersection,” said Michael Jacobs, Special Projects Engineer. “Our goal was to have all movements available by the day after Thanksgiving for businesses in the area. We are at step 232 of 240 steps, and it looks like this project will be delivered on time.”

The freeway construction phase of the Kellogg at Rock Road upgrade began in February 2007 and is scheduled for final completion in the spring of 2010. Wildcat Construction is the prime contractor for this $48 million phase. This construction phase is the last of 10 construction phases in the Rock Road area. Construction began in 2003.

The total investment by the City of Wichita to convert Kellogg from an arterial street to a freeway from 119th Street West to Cypress has been $500 million. The City of Wichita has funded this investment through its portion of the one-percent, countywide sales tax.

Both the City of Wichita and the City of Andover have begun conceptual design to continue the freeway east through Andover.

A final ribbon-cutting ceremony for the interchange project is tentatively scheduled for March 29, 2010.
