The Wichita Fire Department (WFD) is reminding residents to use caution if they deep fry a turkey for Thanksgiving. A wet turkey immersed in hot cooking oil can produce a volatile reaction. The reaction could mix with an open flame and cause fire and injuries. For residents who deep fry a turkey, WFD recommends the following safety tips: Always keep children away from the cooking area; Don’t fry a turkey on a combustible surface such as a deck or inside the garage; Never position your body or face directly over the cooking equipment; Protect your hands and arms with gloves and tight-fitting, long-sleeve clothing; and Pay attention to cooking instructions typically found on the fryer packaging. For additional fire safety information, please contact the Fire Prevention Office at 268-4441. Back to Top
