A groundbreaking ceremony for the Nomar International Marketplace is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 18 on the northwest corner of 21st N. and Broadway. When completed in May 2010, the market will feature a multi-use plaza and a 1,000-square-foot building with office space, public restrooms and an outdoor covered patio. It will be operated by the NOMAR 21st Street Community Development Corporation (CDC) as an outdoor cultural market and entertainment venue. Guest speakers at the groundbreaking include Mayor Carl Brewer and Council member Janet Miller, who represents District VI, which will include the Nomar International Market. “We are excited that construction will begin,” Anita Mendoza, president of the NOMAR CDC, said. “We are expecting the site to be completed in time for the market season.” The project budget is $750,000 for the building and plaza. The project is funded in part by an economic development initiative grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Law Kingdon, Inc. designed the project.
