Work to reconstruct Meridian from 47th Street South to 31st Street South is slated to begin on Jan. 4. A public meeting to present the plans, construction schedule and effects on traffic is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Bethel Life Center, 3777 S. Meridian. The $8.4 million project will widen Meridian between 33rd and 47th Street to five lanes, including a center left-turn lane. Meridian between 31st and 33rd will remain four lanes, but with new pavement. The drainage system will be improved and new five-foot wide sidewalks will be built on both sides of Meridian except for the west side between 31st and 33rd. The 31st and Meridian intersection will be reconstructed to provide new signals and a left-turn lane in each direction. Traffic signals will be installed at the I-235 access ramps. Construction is planned to be completed in November, with landscaping completed by June 2011. During the first phase of construction, traffic on Meridian will be limited to one north bound lane between 47th Street South and MacArthur. Southbound traffic will be detoured to Seneca. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times between MacArthur and 31st Street South. Left turns will be prohibited at 31st and Meridian during storm sewer and paving construction. The first phase of the project will require separate 10-day closures of the I-235 ramps east of Meridian. The second phase will require separate 10-day closures of the I-235 ramps west of Meridian. The intersection of 47th Street and Meridian will be constructed with a future project. Back to Top
