Public Works, Police & Airport Information City of Wichita Public Works’ street crews are preparing for the possibility of winter weather, in response to forecasts of snow and ice over the next 2 days. Two 12-hour shifts of 60 people will start working on the streets starting at 8 p.m. today and will work around the clock as needed. “Keeping city streets drivable is our top priority right now,” Wichita Public Works Director Chris Carrier said. “We will do everything we can to keep them open and as safe as possible.” The City has 1,250 lane miles of emergency snow routes, including Kellogg from Edgemoor to 127th Street East. The Kansas Department of Transportation is responsible for the remainder of Kellogg through Wichita, I-135, I-235 and K-96, including all access ramps. Depending on conditions, one round of City snow routes can be treated with salt and sand in a 12-hour shift. Snow and ice managers advise snow and ice operations are more effective when there is less traffic on the streets. “Our drivers have spreader or plow controls to run, and curbs and turn lanes to navigate,” said Maintenance Engineer Tony DeCicco, who oversees snow and ice operations. “It takes a lot of concentration. Having to worry about cars changing lanes in front of them requires more caution and that slows them down.” The Wichita Police Department will notify the media if the emergency accident reporting plan goes into effect. Drivers involved in a non-injury collision may utilize the Wichita Police Department’s Motor Vehicle Accident reporting form if: No one is injured The collision was not a hit and run No alcohol or drugs were involved Both vehicles are drivable If the collision meets these criteria, drivers may pick up an accident report form at their nearest police substation or QuikTrip, fill it out and return it to the Wichita Police substation within twenty-four hours. The form is also available at wichita.gov on the Wichita Police Department home page (click on the Accident Follow-up link). Mid-Continent Airport travelers are also encouraged to call their respective airline’s toll-free number for current flight information. They will need to have their flight number available.
