The Wichita Police Department and the Historic Midtown Citizens Association are urging citizens to once again ring in the new year safely. Celebrate Safely is an annual project to inform citizens about the dangers of celebratory gunfire, said Patrol North Bureau Commander Captain Jeff Easter. “As part of the project, officers from the four police substations will begin distributing fliers today reminding citizens that firing weapons into the air can be dangerous and is illegal,” Easter said. City Council Member Janet Miller said such gunfire in the past has resulted in serious consequences. “Celebratory gunfire in other cities has caused injuries and property damage,” said Miller. “This is something we want to avoid at all costs. “In 2008, the Wichita Police Department responded to 16 calls where citizens reported firearms had been discharged. We encourage citizens to celebrate safely, and hope every Wichitan has a safe and prosperous New Year. We want everyone to enjoy New Year’s Eve responsibly and not discharge firearms as part of their celebration.” City of Wichita Ordinance 5.88.20 calls for both fines and jail time for discharging a firearm in the city. For more information on Celebrate Safely, contact Captain Jeff Easter, Lt. Alan Prince or Sergeant James Buettgenbach at 316-688-9500. Back to Top
